Why Agriculture Still Sits at the Center of Poverty Alleviation

By: Klint Ostermann, Founder

At Sow Hope Farms, we care about the land in Texas, and the people who will be impacted by agricultural discipleship around the world. Why? Because God has always cared about land, and He has always cared about people. From the beginning, Scripture ties faith to responsibility. God formed man from the dust, placed him in a garden and gave him work before He gave him food. Work was not a punishment. It was worship. Stewardship came before scarcity, and responsibility came before provision.

True Worship

Isaiah 58 exposes what happens when faith is disconnected from obedience. The people were fasting, praying and seeking God earnestly, yet God was not impressed. “Is this the fast that I choose?” He asks. True worship, according to Isaiah 58, loosens bonds, restores dignity, feeds the hungry and rebuilds what has been broken. Religious activity without obedient action does not move God’s heart. Worship that ignores responsibility rings hollow.

Only when obedient does the promise follow. When obedience aligns with worship, light breaks forth like the dawn. Ancient ruins are rebuilt. Foundations are restored. God is not describing charity. He is describing restoration. He is calling His people back into their role as stewards, builders, and cultivators of life under His authority.

The Role of Stewardship

At Sow Hope Farms, we take that calling seriously. We believe the gospel must touch real ground. Discipleship must show up in real work, real systems and real stewardship. Poverty is not only a lack of food, but it is a breakdown of leadership, skills and responsibility.

God created the land not just to feed bodies, but to restore souls.

That conviction shapes our focus. Sow Hope Farms equips missionaries, mission organization leaders, church leaders and agricultural interns with practical, biblical tools to confront poverty and proclaim the gospel. We steward training and demonstration gardens as classrooms, not production farms, preparing leaders to be sent well.

We train using Farming God’s Way because it integrates Scripture, stewardship, management and agriculture into a coherent way of life.

Food is grown, but food is not the mission. Training is. Multiplication is.

Isaiah 58 does not end with relief. It ends with rebuilding foundations for generations. This work is intentional and deeply biblical. When worship aligns with obedience, light breaks forth, ruins are rebuilt, and the land responds. Faith grows. Leaders are prepared. The land is redeemed.
